Return to The World in Spatial Terms Video Questions

The main purpose of geography and geographers is to see and understand patterns in our world. To determine patterns. Geographers work in environmental managements, education, disaster response, city and county planning and much more. Geography itself is the study of place and space. Some questions that geographers answer are where things are on the Earth, why, how places are different from one another and how do humans affect the environment. In geography there are two branches, human geography and physical geography. Human geography is studying the aspects of humans. Physical geography studies climates, land forms, flora, and fauna. Geography dates back as far as the Egyptian empire. Ptolemy was the author of what is considered the oldest book about geography, the book is called the Guide to Geography. This book defined geography as "a representation in pictures of the whole known world together with the phenomena which are contained therein." This definition is stilled used today by geographers.
