Return to History 8 Human Origins Concepts

Homo Sapien is another way of saying modern humans, and us humans today are part of this group. Homo Sapiens were and are the species of hominids that produced many advances in social structure and organization. For example, after the vital discovery of fire, early humans began to utilize the comfort and safety it provided, starting to construct hearths, or early campfires. Many communities of homo sapiens started to gather at these hearths to eat and ensure safety from predators, and these gatherings led to increased social interaction. Many historians believe that at these “campfires” Homo Sapiens shared food, tools, and knowledge, creating a sense of comfort and safety between each other. We do not know exactly when the discovery or use of fire to one’s advantage began, but archeologists and scientists have found evidence of hearth’s from as far as 790,000 years ago at the excavation site Gesher Benot-Ya’aqov. In addition, with much larger brain capacity, most of the Homo Sapiens' development stated to take place when they are out of the womb. Although the disadvantage of this process is that babies are completely vulnerable for the first six years of their lives and therefore their parents need to take care of them. This duty leads to much more time that parents needed to protect their children, leading to much more time to bond with their kin as well. Modern humans are very different to our ancestors because we take the longest amount of time to grow and develop into adults, giving us more time to play, learn, and interact with others. Due to these advances, modern humans (Homo Sapiens) having the most intricate and complex social correspondences out of all the hominids and primates. Many times we are part of groups containing many people we haven’t ever even met.
