Return to History 8 Human Origins Concepts

The Australopithecines is the genus of a group of hominids that lived in the Pliocene(5.3-2.6 mya) to the Pleistocene(2.6mya -11,700years ago). The Australopithecines are bipedal ancestors of modern day humans. There are not many clues to these species lifestyle, but large molars suggest in their dental fossils that they lived as herbivores eating rough plants and vegetables. There are also some suggestions that they slept in the trees at night for safety and spent their time in the day in close proximity to African lakes and grasslands.
