A Legend is used on a map so that it can be used more easily. Maps will use symbols like lines, colors, shapes, and many more things to represent things like buildings, roads, and rivers and it is the legends job to tell you what the symbols mean. Legends have been in use for as long as maps have been in use and are not expected to leave any time soon.
