dar al-Islam- Literally, the house of Islam. This term refers the extent of Islam's sphere of influence. Specifically, the term refers to places in which Islam could be practiced freely, not just places controlled by Islamic military forces. In its early years, the dar al-Islam was relatively small, with few followers and limited influence in the middle eastern world. However, as Muhammad preached his new found religion in middle eastern centers like Mecca, Islams influence became more widespread. Primarily, the spread of Islam was due to the expansion of the Umayyad and Abassid empires; even with the secession of Al-Andalus from the empire, the dar-al Islam retains it's domain. Eventually, in about 800 C.E., the dar al-Islam reached it's greatest extent, reaching all the way from Spain to the Caucasus and India.
