Return to History 8 Human Origins Bone From a Dry Sea

In this chapter of A Bone from a Dry Sea, Greb, a destructive and physical young male who has made a habit of breaking the rules suddenly challenges the leadership of Presh, the chief who has the whole tribes support. They conduct the challenge ritual and the actual fight on a rocky shelf over the sea; Greb, being his usual self, doesn't even bother to play by the rules or follow any kind of routine. The skirmish seems to be going in Presh's favor until his foot is snagged on something and his leg bone snaps. To the tribe's dismay, it seems as though Greb has won the challenge and is their new leader. Ma-Ma and Li and Hooa care for Presh, arriving late to Greb's victory ceremony dance. As he nears each member of the tribe, they must shower him with the spurts of water, but many of them are halfhearted. Greb stops in front of Ma-Ma and she turns her back on him, causing him to strike her, a just birthed mother. Li follows her mother's example and angers Greb so that he shoves her onto his shoulder and continues his parade. Following the influence of Ma-Ma and Hooa, the rest of the tribe stands up to Greb and rescues Li, proving to him that he isn't their leader and that it isn't okay to ignore the rules and rituals. When the males of the tribe have finished Greb, he meanders into the water and clumsily swims down the shore alone.
