In this chapter of ''A Bone From A Dry Sea'', Presh took credit for Li's communication with the dolphin to maintain his dominance, and to not be showed up by a child. To continue their ritual, the tribe lined up on the shore line, Presh taking the lead with Li on his shoulders and Ma-Ma following directly behind in order of dominance in the tribe, and danced. Presh had told the tribe that he had sent Li out to ride in the deep water with the dolphins, and now there were to welcome her home, thereby making his praise, her praise. Li also accompanies Ma-Ma to the water one night to learn the process of giving birth. As a birth present, Presh gave Ma-Ma a shiny shell with a whole in it. Li decided to tie that to Ma-Ma's hair, but the tie wore away, so she plaited her hair to make it last longer. This was turned into a tradition, and the plait wore away at the same time as the babies lost their birth fur, so it only seemed right.

Brief Summary

In this chapter of A Bone From A Dry Sea, Presh took credit for Li's communication with the dolphin to maintain his dominance, and to not be showed up by a child.

Role of Ritual and Leadership

The role of ritual, in this chapter, has to do with the celebration after the communication with the dolphin, and the giving of birth. A ritual is an established procedure that is customary. The tribe danced along the shoreline praising Presh and Li for their accomplishment. That is a procedure that they do whenever something good happens. When one is going to give birth, they take their best friend to help, and sometimes, a girl who is old enough to learn the process. This is a procedure that happens whenever one is to give birth in their tribe. The role of leadership in this chapter refers to Presh taking credit for what Li had done. He did this not only because children cannot have triumph, but because if her, the Leader, were to be showed up by anybody else, it would take away his dominance. So to have leadership, one needs to maintain his dominance, and direct the tribe in the right direction.

Adornment

Adornment is something that beautifies. In this chapter, it is the seashell in the hair. It makes woman more beautiful and says that they just had a baby.
