Enlightenment is the moment where you free yourself from all human attachments and desires. The Buddha deemed that human attachment and desires was what caused suffering in life (2nd Noble Truth). Once you let go of these things, you can free yourself from suffering (3rd Noble Truth). This is considered enlightenment. The Buddha spent 40 days under a tree trying to find enlightenment. He found enlightenment after all these days and became known as the Buddha, or literally "the enlightened one." Enlightenment is key to achieving nirvana.
