The Phoenicians, a very innovative people, were the first to invent a system of letters that today we identify as the alphabet. This way of writing quickly spread to Greece because the Phoenicians were very good at building ships, and they traveled to major trading places which quickly spread this system.

The development of the alphabet was significant for many great reasons. One reason is it used symbols that could be made into any sound, so many languages could use it. It also is the first system of symbols that truly guides the pronunciation of words, while other systems use small pictures that show no specific way of pronunciation.
