There are several reason for the growth and development of the brain.  The first idea states that the Homo habilis and other early humans started to hunt and kill other animals which required more brain power than finding vegetation.

The second idea is with meat added to the diet gave the human’s massive amounts of protein which is vital toward the development of the brain. The final idea is that the creation of tools needed a larger brain capacity and imagination. What this means is that building tools requires a more advanced imagination and greater brain power which can only be acquired through the enlargement and development of the brain.
