History 8 Culture Origins Concepts
Shamanism is when a group believes that there are two existing worlds that interact. The Shaman is a person in the group who is believed to have special powers. These powers include curing the sick, maintaining a good relationship with the powers in the other-world, restoring an upset harmony, reclaiming a lost soul, making good hunting possible, forecasting the future, and casting spells. The Shaman has a direct relationship between both worlds, the real and the spirit. Contact between the Shaman and the spirit world happens through either spirit helpers, often animals, or by sending their soul to the other world through a trance. The Shaman is simply a mediator for both worlds.
