""Summary"" In this chapter, Li and her group begin to settle into their new surroundings after the big wave. They have learned to scavenge for eggs and chicks in their new home of the marshes. The group makes a journey to the sea for the birth of Rawi's baby, which goes successfully. When they return, Rawi wants a birth-ornament like other mothers had received after having a child. Li must use a sharp stone to grind a hole into the shell that Rawi gives her. This sparks her thought to drill a hole in the dolphin bone she is carrying so she can wind her hair through it. (Both the shell and the dolphin bone are referenced in the "Now" sections.)

""Adaptations-Darwin"" Darwin's theory states that animals must adapt, move or die in order to survive [[1]]. Li's tribe chooses to move first to the marshes and then adapt by finding new food sources after the fish that they have always eaten are killed by the big wave and the volcano eruption.

"...the birds already there, the fish, the crocodiles, the pigs--had been killed by the outfall from the eruption, and then the tsunami, but fresh flocks had already arrived and, having nowhere else to go, had started to nest and lay among the flattened reed beds, so at least there had been eggs"(Dickinson 192).

New flora and fauna of the region also adapt to the new landscape and thrive.

"The area of the marsh where the fresh water spread out started to swarm with minnows. Bugs of various kinds appeared. And here and there across the hills pockets of flowers bloomed, their seeds germinating in response to the second rains and the stems managing to struggle through the layer of ash where it happened to lie more thinly than elsewhere"(Dickinson 192).
