Merriam Webster defines a covenant as a usually formal, solemn, and binding agreement. Relating to the near east, a covenant can represent the agreement made with G-d and Abraham that is central to the Hebrew belief system. The covenant states that if G-d promises to protect the Hebrews as he would his children, the Hebrews must obey G-d. A covenant can also refer to the covenant made between G-d and Moses involving the ten commandments. The ten commandments were then etched on stone tablets and sealed inside the ark of the covenant.
