The meaning of interpretation is "the act or process of explaining the meaning of something." So by interpreting something

you are explaining something. We have to interpret many parts of history because of different reasons. Some reasons are the information gets lost; we only know a fraction of a percent of what happened the past (quote by Edwin Fenton); you have to have experts; sometimes if you have too much information you have to select what is important or not, and get rid of the non-important information; and finally by when a historian presents the material. The role of interpretation is to show a way of reality. which means sometimes you have to infer the facts to determine where the truth lies.
