Return to History 8 Egypt ID's

Tutankhamen, one of Egypt's most well known pharaoh, his name meaning "Living Image of [the god] Amun", was born in the year 1345 BCE. Tutankhamen was the son of Akhenaten and proven through various genetic testing procedures, has been identified as the grandson of the great Amenhotep II. He was the 12th king of the 18th Egyptian Dynasty, and became the pharaoh of Egypt at around 9 years old. He is one of the most well known of the pharaohs in modern times, but until his tomb's discovery in 1922 by Howard Carter, he was relatively small and unimportant until then. During his reign he most notably restored traditional Egyptian religion, ending his father's "Amarna Revolution". Though he is seen as a great ruler now, during his lifetime he was crippled by a rare bone disorder, as well as malaria, the bone disorder most likely deriving from generations of inbreeding. Around 1324 BCE Tutankhamen died from these diseases, and his short reign ended.
