Canaan was a country located in the southern portion of the Levant. This area is currently modern day Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and Israel. Canaan is small but very diverse in correspondence with geography.

It includes peaks like Mt. Hermon which is about 9,000 feet above sea level all the way to the Dead sea which is 1,300 feet below sea level. The Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth. It is also very diverse because it is in between the Mediterranean Sea and the Arabian Desert. Summer are usually hot and dry like a desert and most participation happens during the winters, which are cool. The dry areas can receive as little as 2 inches of rainfall. There are not very many lakes or rivers other than the Sea of Galilee and he Jordan River.

Other areas have a more Mediterranean climate with 12 to 40 inches of rain per year. As a result, natural vegetation occurs. Also, wheat, barley, and olive trees used to be grown and native to the area. Many animals are also known from Canaan. These include about 100 species of mammals and about 500 species of birds.

The Canaanites built the first walled towns. These towns were small but played a huge role in defenses. Pottery technology was also developed around this time and used in Canaan. Around 2300 BCE most towns in Canaan were abandoned or reduced because of a global climate change. People turned to small-scale farming and pastoral nomadism to survive.

By 1950 BCE, urban life came back in Canaan. These towns turned into large settlements and palaces were built for the first time. The Middle Bronze Age was a great period for Canaan which was made of strong self-government of individual city-states. Weapons were now made of bronze and new weapons were made. The chariot came about , but despite all of Canaan's' defenses many cities were destroyed. As a result in the Late Bronze Age, Canaan joined the international community. Canaanites served the Egyptian Pharaohs and they traded by sea with other countries. During this time Canaanite cities lacked fortifications. After 1200 BCE the eastern Mediterranean world was economically disrupted and egyptian rule in Canaan collapsed toward the end of the New Kingdom. Because of this, new patterns of settlement and lifestyle emerged. At around 1208 BCE a new wave of settlement came to Canaan.
