After 1200 BCE a great wave of social disturbance hit the eastern Mediterranean world, and scholars believe this disorder could be due to the invasion of the Mycenaean people into the area. Previously ruled by Egypt, Canaan began to emerge as its own people, partially absorbing the Mycenaean culture. It is suggested that at this time Moses led the Israelites from Egypt into Canaan; however, archaeologists have found little evidence of this exodus besides an Egyptian hymn inscribed on stele placing the people of Israel near Canaan in the year 1208 BCE. These changes in the Canaanite culture are important because as the culture moves forward in history it becomes more of its own rather than just that of an Egyptian controlled region and this allows more groups of peoples to impact its culture and history.
