The horticultural society was the defining step fro hunting and gathering to organized agriculture. In horticultural societies nature was viewed as feminine. The role of women in horticultural societies had "political and sociological consequences". Women were viewed as the "mother" of nature that gave it life and allowed it to prosper. Women were the ones who owned and regulated the garden plots and passed them down from generation to generation. Women could also decide when they should move to new land if the soil was not good enough for use in farming. Unlike other societies women had political power and authority to make decisions.
