Return to History 8 Human Origins Concepts

Homo ergaster, more commonly known as Homo erectus, is a species that begins to be found in the fossil record at around 1.9 million years ago. Homo erectus were the first to stand upright, were very good runners, had a larger brain, were the first to control fire, and are also associated with the first handaxes and stone tools (Acheulean tools)

There is much debate about whether or not Homo ergaster and Homo erectus are the same species. There are some differences, but scientists typically refer to early African populations as Homo Ergaster, and Homo erectus for the later ones usually found in Asia. There are also small differences in skull size and shape, but nothing major.
