A religion is a system of beliefs and values addressing questions about our origin and purpose on Earth. In order for a religion to function properly, the followers of that religion must have faith that the answers given are right.

Characteristics of Religion

Every religion contains these characteristics: Belief in a supernatural being or power, a system of rituals, holy writings, public worship, ordained ministers, and certain thing that are considered holy.

Belief in the Supernatural
+
Some religions consider there to be a force controlling the world who is without a form, while others can be either monotheistic or polytheistic. Monotheistic religions believe in one single religion, such as Christianity and Judaism. Polytheistic religions believe in multiple different gods, like Hinduism and Jainism.

Holy Texts
+
Some religions have sets of written myths and stories which are considered holy. Some examples of this are the Quran and the Bible.

Rituals
+
Every religion has a different system of different ceremonies and rituals reenacting the myths they believe in. These rituals include coming of age ceremonies and marriage ceremonies.

Appointed Minister
+
In every religion, certain individuals are trained to perform rituals and tasks. For example, pastors and rabbi are both different types of appointed officials.

Public Worship
+
The members of some religions are required to show their belief in the religion by meeting in a holy place to worship. For example, many Christians go to church to pray every Sunday morning.

Holy Things
+
Every religion contains specific objects or things that are considered sacred. They are symbols of the supernatural powers the religion worships and looks up to. The objects or things can be both physical objects and/or ideas.
