In 555 BC, Nabonidus (555-539 BC), the respected Assyrian king, took control of Babylon. He worshiped sin, the Assyrian moon god, because his mother was a priestess of the moon god. When Nabonidus ruled Babylon, he put Sin over Marduk (chief god of Babylon); angering the Babylonian people. In 539 BC, Cyrus the Great of Persia conquered Babylonia, the ancient city falling to the Persians. Naturally, the angry Babylonians welcomed Cyrus. Nabonidus was captured and exiled by the Cyrus and the Persians in 539 BC. This conquest ended the Semitic domination of Mesopotamia forever.
