− | We have little archaeological evidence of the Hebrew people in 1200 BCE as they were barely formed. However, there is one significant piece of evidence that comes not from Canaan, but Egypt. The evidence is engraved in the victory stele of Pharaoh Merneptah, son of Ramesses II. The stele mentions a list of the peoples and city-states of Canaan including the Hebrews. The list happens to mention them as a people instead of a city-state showing how new and unformed the Israelite society was. The people are said to be in the central highlands, which is supported by archaeology with the sudden formation of 300-400 villages in the area.
