There are reasons that we, as intelligent human beings, think of explaining why history is important. History retains all the knowledge we require about people and societies and how they both behave. Basically, history is the most vital evidence we have to answer the questions we all have as to why we do the things we do and why we handle certain situations the way we do. To quote a certain book, "History offers the only extensive evidential base for the contemplation and analysis of how societies function, and people need to have some sense of how societies function simply to run their own lives." (CF Manual, 3) Long story short, as humans, we are nosy and because of that, need to know about the past generations of our fellow nosy people.
