Ancient Egyptians believed that the universe forever had Ma'at, and was always ordered. If order was offset, it would soon be balanced again. They believed that purity was rewarded but sin was always punished. The idea of Ma'at was the foundation of Egyptian civilization. The Egyptians also thought there to be a goddess of the same name, Ma'at, who helped to create truth, justice, and harmony. Balance on earth was believed to be directly connected to her. She wore an ostrich feather which is the same feather which was balanced on the scales of truth.  If your heart was heavier, your soul was devoured by Amut. She was the daughter of the sun god Re, and pharaohs were often depicted praying to her for balance.
