The purpose of religion as seen by Elijah is to unite people together. Since he was a child, Elijah was visited by angels. His parents took him to a priest who identified him as a prophet of the spirit who exalts himself with the word of God. As he gets older the visits from the angels start to get less frequent. His views on religion change as he gets older because he sees that instead of uniting people together it can tear regions apart. He sees this because Jezebel goes and slays all of the priest and prophets spreading the word of the lord and not the word of the Lebanese gods
