Hieroglyphics were the base of Egyptian society. Hieroglyphics, the ancient Egyptian writing system, were discovered in 1799 by Pierre Bouchard with the Rosetta Stone. Without the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, much of Egypt's past would be vastly unknown. The Rosetta Stone was filled with sentences lamenting on all of the Pharaoh's good deeds towards the people.  The stone was written in three languages-Greek, demotic, and the never-seen-before hieroglyphics.  Hieroglyphics consisted of symbols called hieroglyphs.  These hieroglyphs are part of a logographic writing system that used pictures and symbols as sounds or words.  For example, an eye with tears meant "to cry." Ancient Egypt had over a thousand hieroglyphs  that were used to describe a great deal of events or even write stories. In ancient Egyptian society, being a scribe was one of the most well-respected positions.  Hieroglyphics revolutionized the society of Egypt because they allowed for people to write down their thoughts or things that were occurring at the time, helping the people of today to learn every aspect of their ancient society.
