[[History 8 Fifth Mountain Readings]]
The Phoenicians and the Israelites had several conflicts, which were exemplified throughout "The Fifth Mountain". For example, one of the main conflicts that occurred at the heart of the story, writing, was highlighted in the novel. However, a differing conflict that got in the way of the peace between Phoenicia and Israel is their different religions and values. For example, when Princess Jezebel married the king of Israel, Ahab, the Israelites thought that there would continue to be peace between Israel and Phoenicia, the princess' native country. Jezebel slowly eases ideas of praying to Phoenician gods to the land of Israel and the king, until she orders all prophets of the one G-d and Israelites who refuse to worship the Phoenician gods to be executed. "When he learned of his king's marriage to Jezebel, princess of Tyre, he had thought it of little significance. Other kings had done the same, and the result had been a lasting peace in the region and an ever more important trade with Lebanon" ("The Fifth Mountain" pg. 11). "After ascending the throne, Jezebel had asked Ahab to replace the worship of the Lord with that of the gods of Lebanon" ("The Fifth Mountain pg. 12). This order from the new princess was the cause of the story of Elijah and "The Fifth Mountain". Another conflict that disrupted the peace between the two countries was competing for land. Before Jezebel arrived in Israel, Phoenicia and Israel fought over land in the 10th and 11th centuries. Fortunately, by the 10th century, the fighting came to a closure between the countries, and the city of Jerusalem was settled, while the Phoenicians established their own city, Tyre. These conflicts are still relevant today; however, they are disputed between Israel and many different countries. Many countries in the middle east believe that Israel should not be its own country and want to take over, but Israel believes that G-d gave them that land.
