In the beginning of Chapter Nine, Meren visits the body of the Hittite emissary. Sokar, along with his servant Min, show up soon after to investigate the corpse. Sokar rudely tells Meren to leave the body alone, as he doesn't realize he is speaking to a nobleman, and embarrasses himself immensely. Once Meren reveals himself as the Eyes and Ears of the Pharaoh, Sokar and Min drop to the floor and bow to him, but Meren focuses on Min instead of Sokar. Shocked by this behavior, Sokar hears “the voice of his heart grow louder, so that it seemed to inhabit his ears. His stomach began to burn, and the longer Lord Meren studied Min’s prostrate figure, the hotter his belly burned” (130). Struck by a burning jealousy for Min, Sokar wishes Meren paid more attention to him because of his status as the chief of watchmen, instead of focusing on someone with such a lower status than his own. Sokar is soon pulled away from the scene in his chariot, but he looks back to glimpse Meren bending down to talk to Min like they are equals. Once Min looks back with a grin of amusement, Sokar knows his career is ruined, most likely due to whatever Min told Meren, along with his failures to document the murders and rude attitude towards Lord Meren.
