| − | In Hebrew, the word for Jordan means "the descender." The Jordan River Valley is a good example of this word used literally. The valley begins at the top of Mount Hermon, about 200 feet above sea level, and plummets into the Sea of Galilee, about 700 feet below sea level. From there it stretches on to the Dead Sea, almost 1300 feet below sea level, making it the lowest piece of land on earth. All along the Jordan River Valley and the Sea of Galilee there are very fertile and rich farmlands that let the people living there harvest plenty of fruits, grains and crops. This, as well as the fishing industry centralized at the Sea of Galilee and along the Jordan River, makes the Jordan River Valley a key point in the Middle East.
