The Aurignacians were the first anatomically modern humans to reach Europe from Africa. Their path was traced through the Middle East. They came into Europe around 40,000 to 35,000 years ago and most likely out competed the Neanderthals who went extinct around 34-35,000 years ago. They created new forms of technology such as tools and ornaments not seen in the 200,000 years of record of Neanderthal cultures. They were able to utilize their environment for things impractical to survival such as jewelry. They also made the conscious decisions such as making reshaped blades made from non-local stone as they viewed it as better. Aurignacians were the first hominids to make a tool in order to make a tool, meaning their technology was very specialized and complex. The Aurignacians lived in many of the same caves and shelters as the Neanderthals had before and there is some evidence for meetings between the two hominids. They were also able to somewhat get along and have a mutually beneficial relationship with a somewhat domesticated version of the gray wolf. They also had a leader of the tribe who gave them order by communing with animals or venturing to the spirit realm. Once the Ice Age came the Aurignacians were not able to cope with the harsh conditions and either evolved into or were replaced by the gravettians.
