According to the online Center for Shamanic Studies, a shaman is the 'spiritual and ceremonial leader' of a culture. Yet shamans are much more than that - they are the sole person in a society that has direct contact with the 'other-word' (''CF Manual'' 45).  However, this mostly applies to current cultures. In early cultures, shamans would heal the sick and wounded, oversee all spiritual activities, predict the future, prepare the dead for the afterlife, and guarantee good hunting, among other things. Shamans would also contact the spirit world for advice and assistance, making them the most important and influential spiritual leader. Most past cultures were theocracies, so shamans would also be the predominant social and political leaders. Since shamans were the first leading religious and governmental figures in early societies, they also led the way for new traditions and developments in early societies.
