In 722 BCE, the second invasion of the Northern Kingdom by the Assyrians took place, under the leadership of Shalmaneser and Sargon. The northern kingdom of Israel came to an end around 722 BCE with the capture of its capital, Samaria. The Assyrians besieged Samaria, who resisted for three years. The next year, Samaria was captured and burned to the ground. The surviving population was deported.
