17. Describe the effects of Assyria on the Northern Kingdom.
Return to History 8 Near East Questions
In 734-732 BCE, Assyrian king Tiglath-Pileser led the first invasion of the Northern Kingdom, Israel. Assyria conquered much of the Northern Kingdom's land and forced its inhabitants into exile. Further invasions by kings Shalmaneser and Sargon in 722 BCE culminated in a three year siege of the Northern Kingdom's capital, Samaria. The Assyrians eventually conquered Samaria and burned it to the ground. The surviving population was deported, bringing the Northern Kingdom of Israel to an end and giving birth to the legend of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel.
