How did government change during the Patriarchal period?

Backround Information

The patriarchal period is the time of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the fathers of the Hebrew religion. The patriarchal period is dated between 1950 and 1500 BC. Yahweh commanded Abraham to take his family and leave his home in Mesopotamia. Yahweh chose Abraham's people to rule over all other peoples.

Government during the Patriarchal Period

Abraham's people followed a tribal way of life. The tribe was centered around familial relationships and connection to G-d. Basically anybody that was not part of G-d's chosen group was not allowed to take part in worship and special connection to G-d. Within the tribes, there stood a familial hierarchy. The head of the family (the patriarch) was head of the tribe and all religious and political aspects of life. The patriarch, the first of whom was Abraham, most likely communicated with G-d to receive insight, enlightening, and information on how to rule their tribe.

G-d's chosen people were extremely obedient, which may be the quality G-d chose them for. This obedience is shown in the biblical story of Abraham agreeing to sacrifice his young son, Isaac, the next patriarch. G-d sent an angel to stop Abraham from actually killing his son, and to deliver blessings for all of Abraham's descendants.

The tribal government based off of patriarchs and worship of G-d is very different from the great kings of Mesopotamia. "Desiring a king is disobedience to G-d" (manual 99). Having any one ruler other than G-d is disobedient in that one is not focused on the worship of G-d, rather the appeasement of their king. The government of the Patriarchal Period changes from a monarchy to a hierarchy based off of the worship of G-d
