Social Stratification is a system where the society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy.  This began when people started getting more stuff, and so people started to think that the more stuff you have, the better you are in society in comparison to others.  This grew the most when copper was discovered and people could make lots of things out of it.  Social Stratification then lead to discrimination and the rich having power over everyone in the government.
