Pre-Patriarchal period: "Early Hebrews were nomads, wandering tribal groups who were organized along classic tribal logic." This means that the early Hebrews most likely worshipped the local gods, and that they probably worshipped several separate, personal gods. The early Hebrews did not worship the one single god, but rather each Hebrew tribe worshipped their own personal god.

During the Patriarchal period: During the Patriarchal period, the god Yahweh (a regional god) kept gaining more power, first by becoming the god of Abraham, and then becoming the god of Abraham and his descendants. According to Hebrew history, Yahweh visited Abraham and told him to move his family out of Mesopotamia and to the west. During his migration, Abraham "stopped at Shechem and was again visited by Yahweh, who then told him that all this land would be given to him and his decedents."

Summary: During the Patriarchal period, the local god, Yahweh, began to gain more power and started getting "promoted" into a more important deity, and eventually, into the one God that the Hebrews worship.
