Honoring Animals

Some groups of Neanderthals had seemingly honored particular animals in the wild. After excavating a French Neanderthal site, archaeologists found a depression in the ground that was covered a one-ton slab of stone. This rectangular pit was filled with the bones of twenty bears, which indicates that the group of Neanderthals living there respected the bear.

Sensibilities

In 1957, the skeleton of a Neanderthal was discovered in the mountains of northern Iraq.
