19. Neanderthal Cultural life

Honoring Animals
Some groups of Neanderthals had seemingly honored particular animals in the wild. After excavating a French Neanderthal site, archaeologists found a depression in the ground that was covered a one-ton slab of stone. This rectangular pit was filled with the bones of twenty bears, which indicates that the group of Neanderthals living there respected the bear.
Sensibilities
In 1957, the skeleton of a Neanderthal was discovered in the mountains of northern Iraq. Evidence from the bone revealed that the Neanderthal was blind in one eye and suffered from arthritis.
