Agriculture is a sedentary form of food accumulation. It allows the people who use it to stay in one place and build permanent dwellings (at least until the soil is depleted). Hunting and gathering occupied most if not all of early humans' time, but agriculture gave humans spare time to develop the basis for culture. Herders and farmers combined their skills in villages, resulting in food security. The surplus of food allowed society to develop. Having more time to create art and tell stories propelled groups of early humans on the path to civilization, defined as "an advanced state of human society." Agriculture allowed human societies to become more complex. However, localized agriculture could not create a complex civilization. When farmers settled in "village communities" for protection against brigands, some form of government became necessary. The detailed systems of irrigation, requiring scores of laborers, gave rise to a higher authority that precluded dishonesty and ensured equal access to resources. The population also increased because hunter gatherers could not have many small children that would have to be carried on their lengthy treks for food. However, families in agricultural societies could have multiple young children in a short period of time because they could care for them at home without having to travel long distances.
