Turner's theory states that the geography of a people determines its culture. Now, for the Phoenecians, their land had hills and mountains, but the farmland was not good. But luckily enough for the Phoenecians, they just happened to live right by the Mediterranean Sea. So the Phoenician empire became "the most skillful shipbuilders and navigators of their time" (CF Manual, 104). So, Turners' theory proves true. Phoenicia was small and had bad farmland, so they turned to the sea and started to build ships and trade overseas to survive and grow as an Empire. The Pheonicians also went to the British Isles for tin and possibly could have sailed around and traded in Africa. (CF Manual, 104)
