Return to History 8 Human Origins Concepts

The earliest H. Sapiens had a more advanced culture than any other. 100,000 years ago, "symbolic behavior" appeared in the form of art, but for only a flicker of time. Behavior that we would today recognize as modern humans came about 30,000 years ago. Originally, H. Sapiens would make stone tools such as scrapes and points similar to the Neanderthals. However, creating these tools required abstract thought to be able to think ahead, something no other animal could do. They used cores in their builds similar to how we use replaceable parts -- if one breaks, you can easily fix it. Eventually, H. Sapiens used materials such as ivory, antler, and bone. They were also eventually able to craft arrows and throwing spears for killing at range. H. Sapiens also had almost complete control over fire, which made them able to go to even more locations than the Neanderthals were able to go. 26,000 years ago, the first kiln was made using fire and clay was hardened. H. Sapiens also used their environment better than any of their predecessors. They were able to use materials such as flax to create baskets and they were able to sew for warm clothing. Burials were also much more fancy, possibly lining the body with valued goods.
