The Assyrian Empire was a powerful empire that reigned for many years. After the death of Ashurbanipal, the once dominant empire began to collapse. Because the Assyrian empire was such a powerful empire, and there was one king that ruled over the whole civilization, the success of the empire depended on the king. Ashurbanipal was a great king, and when he died, the civilization began to die as well. The Babylonians and the Medes then began to conquer Assyria by burning the city of Nineveh to the ground.

What caused the end of the Assyrian empire?

The end of the Assyrian empire was caused by things like the end of Ashurbanipal's rule, over expansion, and the pressure of enemies like the Babylonians. The Babylonians were aided by others and eventually they burned down Nineveh and took over Mesopotamia. Plutarch's theory helps prove this because once Ashurbanipal stopped ruling the Assyrians, they began to crumble. Then the great Nabopolassar and the Babylonians took charge over the Assyrians.
