Tyrian dye is a crimson colored dye made from a snail.  The dye was so expensive and valuable that only kings and wealthy nobles could afford garments dyed with it.  Tyrian Dye was one of the many innovations made by the Phoenicians.  Tyre, the capital or leader city of Phoenicia, was the Tyrian dye capital of the world.  (Manual pages 104-105)
