In the old days, there was a type of society known and a blade and burin society.  Among others, they used a device called a burnisher.  A burnisher is a tools that is used to smooth hides to make them more useful.  They usually wore the hides of the animals they hunted.  This includes bears and mammoths.  Burnishers were also used to rub in coloring.  When the first human societies came along, so did the interest in clothing and enhancing one another.  They used these burnishers to color the hides and enhance looks.  The use of burnishers to smooth out clothing was essential to wearing hides and not getting a rash or getting cut.  On the other hand, using burnishers to color clothing was solely for recreational purposes.
