Early on they had no articulate speech, but the sounds they made did have meanings. There was not yet spoken language, but don't get confused between language and speech. With speech, you can make words, but no one would be able to understand. Speech has no comprehension, it is just the sounds and words made. Language, on the other hand, is when making words that you can use to communicate with people who speak the same language. You can comprehend the sounds created and you can respond to those sounds with sounds of your own. Spoken language, most likely, did not develop until relatively late on the ladder of evolution.
