− | Tyre, an ancient port city in the Middle East, was a prominent city in Phoenicia [http://www.ancient.eu.com/Tyre/]. Tyre was the "center of the purple-dye industry" (Manual 105). This was important because purple dye was very expensive and those who wore dyed clothes were usually very wealthy. The existence of dyed clothes created a more prominent class system in society. Also, trade was a very important part of the economy of Tyre.
