What caused the collapse of Phoenicia was the conquering of the major cities by Alexander the Great, the brilliant greek ruler. The major cities of Phoenicia were able to withstand most early attacks from the Assyrians around 6th Century B.C., but when the Persian culture and ways infiltrated Phoenician culture it weakened them to the later coming attacks of Alexander the Great.
