There are various reasons why homo sapiens are the only hominid left. There's the obvious reason: adaptation. The Neanderthals, like the Boisei, were so perfectly adapted to their environment, that when the environment changed, they couldn't cope. However, we could by adapting, and we pushed out the Neanderthals, being the group with the upper hand. After all, you don't have to fail to become extinct, just succeed less often than the other group, which is what Homo Neanderthalensis did.

Also, we had the brain power to imagine, and because of that, develop culturally, not just physically. We learned to manipulate our environment. Using eggs to store water for later is just one example. The frontal lobe, which Neanderthals do not possess, is the center for logical thinking, so that was another contributing factor to our survival.
