Another way Amonhotep III broke with tradition is that he married a commoner as his chief wife. The Great Royal Wife Tiye was a strong woman who often appeared equal in height to Amonhotep III in many depictions, indicating that she was very respected and highly regarded and not just another vessel for producing heirs. Two temples were discovered- one dedicated to worshiping Amonhotep III and one dedicated to worshiping Tiye.

Amohotep's legacy was that he made Egypt wealthier and more peaceful than ever before and created a huge empire of loyal city-states dependent upon Egypt. He broke with tradition by becoming a diplomatic king instead of a warrior, and he also raised the stature of the Great Royal Wife. He was also a builder and commissioned many great palaces and temples with his great wealth. He was the father of Akhenaten.
