The Philistines are generally thought to be one group of the Sea Peoples, or Pelset, who were featured in Egyptian inscriptions. The  Philistine immigrants eventually left the Aegean area and arrived on the Mediterranean coast. In the Iron Age I period, they were accepted as an ethnic group for the first time.

The Philistines controlled Palestine, which was named for them, for much of the area's early history. They lived along the Mediterranean coast, which was a rich agricultural area.
